Olivia Obeso, Ph.D.
program co-coordinator, assistant professor
Olivia Obeso’s teaching is informed by her belief that we should prepare teachers and students to create the worlds we dream of by tactfully navigating and changing the world that we live in. Her literacy methods courses are designed to create opportunities for future teachers to actively explore the relationship between theory, politics, and classroom practice in order to deepen their commitment to culturally and linguistically sustaining instruction. Moreover, she emphasizes the importance of seeing educational justice as a collective endeavor and works to model humanizing practices that she hopes aspiring teachers will adopt as they enter the profession. Obeso’s research focuses on the intersection of teacher identity, agency, and advocacy, particularly as these factors relate to the inequities that linguistically marginalized teachers and students face.
