Single Subject Program Coursework & Credential Requirements

PROGRAM COURSEWORK:

The Single Subject Teaching Credential program follows a cohort model and traditional schedule.

Teacher candidates will be expected to participate in coursework on the Cal Poly campus or time spent in their clinical placement classroom throughout San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County during the day hours Monday through Friday. All courses and clinical practice placements are offered in person only.

Agricultural Education candidates follow a different course sequence.

EDUC 416 Literacy, Language, and Culture in the Content Areas (3 units)

EDUC 414 Curriculum and Inquiry in Public Schools (4 units)

CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements for the Five-Year Single Subject Preliminary Teaching Credential:

  1. Completion of a baccalaureate or higher degree, except in professional education, from a regionally accredited institution
  2. Completion of Basic Skills Competency
  3. Completion of the Subject Matter Competency (CSET or Approved Subject Matter Program)
  4. Demonstration of knowledge of the principles and provisions of the Constitution of the United States
    • POLS 112 - American & California Government, equivalent or U.S. Constitution exam offered by Cuesta College or exam offered onlineApplicants who earned their bachelor's degrees at a CSU Campus will have met this requirement by virtue of their degree.
  5. Successful completion of Single Subject Credential Program coursework and Clinical Practice in addition to:
    • Google Level 1 Certificate of Completion 
    • HLTH 443 - Health Education OR KINE 250 - Healthy Living OR approved equivalent (4 units)

    • CPR Certification - Must include all three: adult, child, and infant training, follow the American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines, and be valid at the time of credential recommendation. 
  6. Pass the Teacher Performance Assessment (EdTPA)
  7. Complete the SOE Exit Survey
  8. Submit a Credential Request Application to the School of Education via email: soe@calpoly.edu. 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Completion of Mandated Reporter Training
  2. Evidence of completion of the speaking and writing competencies requirement
