Each year, the School of Education brings a well-known author to the Central Coast. In May, Cal Poly welcomed Matt de la Peña, award winning children’s book author. De la Peña’s book, Last Stop on Market Street, was awarded the 2016 Newbery Medal, Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor awards.

A public talk and book signing was held at Pacheco Elementary School. During his trip to the Central Coast, de la Peña also visited students and teachers at Mary Buren Elementary School and Kermit McKenzie Junior High in Guadalupe.

The event was co-sponsored by the Spanish Authorization for Bilingual Educators Program and funded by an Instructionally Related Activities grant from Cal Poly.

Teacher Candidates Travel to Bilingual Educators Conference

Cabe

Each spring, bilingual teacher candidates in the Spanish Authorization for Bilingual Educators Program (SABE) attend the California Association for Bilingual Education Conference. The conference gives the candidates a better understanding of how to support California's growing population of English Learners.

This year, seven bilingual candidates and two faculty members, Julee Bauer and Briana Ronan, attended the SABE conference in Anaheim. The SABE teacher candidates presented their original research on biliteracy interventions to a packed house of in-service educators and administrators. The presentations were very well received. Kudos to the SABE Candidates for a job well done!
