After more than 40 years in education, including nine years at Cal Poly, Kathy Harris retired at the end of the 2011-12 academic year. Fortunately for Cal Poly’s School of Education, Harris has opted to participate in the Faculty Early Retirement Program and will teach courses in winter and spring quarters for the next few years.
An expert in the areas of collaboration, consultation and co-teaching, Harris was instrumental in shaping the current, highly integrated M.A. in Education/Education Specialist Mild Moderate Credential Program into the successful program that it is today. She not only co-wrote a grant that allowed the fledgling program to flourish in its early years but also worked every year to develop and nurture relationships with school districts, teachers, colleagues and candidates.
An established author in her field with more than 50 publications, Harris ended her career by publishing an article with her graduate students on the knowledge, skills and dispositions required for culturally competent and interculturally sensitive leaders in education.
Her plans in retirement include spending time with her husband, Blaine, and enjoying days with no agendas.
