About Dr. Brito

Dr. Efrain Brito is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education and the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics at Cal Poly. His research is grounded in critical pedagogy, critical literacy, and generativity, and examines the intersections of language, race, gender, and ideology in the organization of public schools, what gets taught, and how.  Specifically, his work focuses on historically marginalized and forgotten student populations, and the preparation of teachers to work in multilingual, multiethnic, and multiracial settings. In addition to his community-engaged, and generativity focused research, Dr. Brito actively supports pre-service teachers through his ongoing work in the Single Subject Teacher Education Program (SSTEP) at the School of Education at Cal Poly. His scholarship has been published in journals such as The Journal of the Association of Teacher Educators. Dr. Brito earned his Ph.D. in Education with a focus on Race, Inequality and Language from The Graduate School of Education at Stanford University.  He also holds a M.E. from the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, a M.A. in Latin American Studies from Stanford University, as well as a B.A. and J.D. from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
