Annual Film Screening Focuses on Assessment and Project-Based Learning
The annual School of Education film screening took place in February. A group of educators and future educators joined together to watch the film, “Beyond Measure.” The film questiosn the greater purpose of education in the context of efforts to standardize classroom instruction and assessment. The film emphasized project-based learning, a message the crowd was enthusiastic about given Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing approach.
Author and Candidates Discuss Academic Profiling in Public Schools
In February, the School of Education’s Multiple and Single Subject programs hosted a conversation with Gilda Ochoa author of “Academic Profiling: Latinos, Asian Americans, and the Achievement Gap.” Students from both credential programs engaged in a thoughtful discussion with the author on disparities in opportunity and status and the treatment of minority students in California public high schools. Ochoa is the Susan Currier Visiting Professor for Teaching Excellence at Cal Poly and a professor of sociology and Chicano/a Latino/a studies at Pomona College.
Candidates Travel to Bilingual Educators Conference
Each spring, a cohort of teacher candidates and faculty working with SABE attend the California Association for Bilingual Educators conference. The conference gives teacher candidates a better understanding of how to support California's growing population of English Learners. This year, eleven bilingual candidates and two faculty members, Julee Bauer and Briana Ronan, attended the conference in San Francisco in March. The teacher candidates presented their original research on bilingual literacy and science interventions.
Multiple Subject Candidates to Visit Museum of Tolerance
In May, faculty and students from the Multiple Subject Teacher Preparation Program will visit the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. The group will attend a two-day training titled Tools for Tolerance for Educators. The program focuses on anti-bias education and creating inclusive and equitable schools. Last year, a group of MSTEP students, faculty and cooperating teachers attended a similar program and found it immensely valuable. Faculty did not hesitate to take the opportunity when Cal Poly was invited back for another visit.
