Kimberly Kelly (B.S., Liberal Studies, 2004; Multiple Subject Credential, 2005), Jessica Djuric (Multiple Subject Credential, 2011) and Barbara Blanke (M.A., Education, 1985) presented at the California State Math Conference in November. Their presentation focused on how they’ve helped parents prepare for the implementation of the California Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.
The three met while Blanke was consulting for San Luis Coastal Unified School District. Blanke is passionate about educating parents as well as teachers and students when it comes to mathematics. “It is critical to work in harmony with parents to support all students’ mathematical learning,” she said.
Kelly and Djuric are part of the district’s math support team. After working with Blanke, the team decided to increase support for parents. They held informational meetings, parent coffees, and family math nights to help parents understand the new standards. They also offered problems of the month.
Blanke encouraged Kelly and Djuric to present at the conference. “Being accepted to speak at this prestigious conferences was exhilarating,” Djuric said.
“It was such a privilege and honor to be listed next to our mentors and heroes in math education,” Kelly said. “We are so excited to help other educators see the value of getting parents involved in math education.”
The trio will present together again at the National Conference for Supervisors of Mathematics in Oakland, Calif., in April. “It all started at Cal Poly with our passion for teaching and supportive professors,” Djuric said. For more information on how to support parents, visit the team’s website.
