In November, the Bureau of Education and Research Recognized Barbara Blanke (M.A., Education, 1985) for her contributions to teachers around the country. During the past seven years, Blanke has planned and facilitated more than 220 seminars for the bureau, reaching more than 9,450 teachers with information on best practices and 21st century skills. It is estimated that her work has indirectly touched the lives of over 236,000 students.

Blanke was the honored alumna of the School of Education (then the University Center for Teacher Education) in 2002 and received the Distinguished Lecturer Award from Cal Poly's chapter of the California Faculty Association in 2003-2004 for her work as a teacher-in-residence. Her work with pre-service teachers inspired her to earn her doctorate in teacher leadership with a math education emphasis.

Blanke is currently a university supervisor for the School of Education and continues to consult internationally and work with local school districts to promote best practices for all students in mathematics. Blanke says that "teaching chose her," but Cal Poly professors nurtured and supported her to become the teacher of teachers that she is today.
