Coassessing

Sample main imageOverview of Coassessing

Using the results of student assessments and/or teacher reflection on lesson implementation, coteachers engage in coassessing to inform future coplanning and coinstructing.

We define coassessing as two teachers working together as peers to review the outcomes of an assessment of student learning OR to reflect on a lesson just taught for the purpose of improving instruction.

Identification of High-Leverage Coassessing Practices

When coteachers meet to engage in data-driven reflection – whether collaborating in-person or virtually – we recommend that they utilize high-leverage coassessing practices while engaged in collaborative discourse.

Through the coding and analysis of video-recorded coassessing sessions, our research team has identified the following high-leverage coassessing practices:

  • Clear & accurate analysis of student performance in respect to intended outcomes & criteria
  • Patterns of learning identified for whole class, individuals, & subgroups of students
  • Analysis of student performance represents an asset-based view of students & their backgrounds
  • Identification of detailed & appropriate next steps for instruction based on analysis

Coassessing Videos

For each high-leverage coassessing practice listed below, click on the expandable box to access the video clip(s) provided that exemplify that coassessing practice. Each clip includes brief information about the teaching context (e.g., grade) as well as the identification of collaborative discourse practices showcased in the clip.
