Cal Poly has a team of 20 multiple subject supervisors working with 73 teacher candidates in 26 school sites throughout San Luis Obispo County. Supervisors are a resource for candidates throughout their student teaching experience, observing them in the classroom and providing constructive feedback. Supervisors help to prepare candidates for the next step in the teacher preparation process.

"Supervisors are vital to the process of continuous improvement in the School of Education teacher education program," said Jon Margerum-Leys, dean of the School of Education. "The supervisor’s job is to get teacher candidates prepared to start at the starting line."

Bev Shaw (B.S., Social Science, 1968; Multiple Subject Credential, 1969), a former teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent, now works as a supervisor. Shaw knows first-hand the value of the supervisor's role in preparing teacher candidates. "In my management roles in the Bay Area, I interviewed countless teacher candidates for my schools and districts. I quickly learned that hiring a Cal Poly candidate was always an advantage. They interviewed well, had real-world, child-centered experiences because of the Cal Poly Learn by Doing philosophy, and usually outperformed other candidates once in the classroom," Shaw said.
